Redundancy and Entropy 1

Music video: Hard rock Hallelujah special edition
Band: Lordi
Genre: Hard Rock/Heavy Metal

This music video was first shown live on the Eurovision song contest in 2007 as the opening video after the Finnish metal band Lordi won the contest the year before with their song “Hard Rock Hallelujah”. Lordi have a unique image that attracts their audience: the whole band is dressed as monsters including a mummy guitarist and an un-dead Minotaur on base (Bizarre I know) this video is a testament to Lordi’s image: Monsters, Fire, Ice and Rock.

Entropic Elements

One very odd element of the video is the fact that it starts like a film preview with dramatic “x factor style” choir music and titles introducing the location, as well as face paced cuts between different metal symbolist shots.

The bands’ costumes are not what you would expect in a band, in fact they hardly look human at all, their costumes hide their true identity making them almost like heavy metal super heroes, and this attracts their audience because of the element of mystery they provide

Another very unexpected entropic element is the fact that half way through the music video the bands lead singer, Mr Lordi, breathes fire at the screen and is suddenly on stage in a live performance in a packed arena. This gives the impression of Lordi’s victory over typical music the year before.

 Redundant Elements
The symbolism of heavy metal such as the bands symbol, fire, darkness, action and tribal themes are often featured in this sort of music video and Lordi are no exception and their logo is shown here.

Typical to the genre the band are shown in almost every shot singing, playing their instruments or acting.

Almost all music videos have back ground characters to give more variety to the video. In this video all the characters are wearing similar costumes to the band themselves.
